[–SUITE–]
Dan inviting questions: Guys,
Rather than update, I thought I would answer a few questions, if you have any.
Things to note, the stealth tank is red, it has a bluish, white stealth effect. The stealth tank does not kick up dust when stealthed, we had that on but it gave everything away, made the stealth tank very easy to kill.
There are lasers in game, Nod only (they are obelisk modules, regular and chain driven).
The Obelisk is very deadly, it will kill in one shot in most cases. What else do you want to know?
minimum requirements: We have set the min specs. I will let you know when it I can let the cat out of the bag, in fact maybe I will let Dev do it…..
various topics: I have to run through a couple levels with the designers, I will let the questions build a bit.
We do have an install and it is a little different than the usual, I think you all will like it.
We haven’t finalized the icon yet, though we have a few choices.
Game length is based on lots of things, if you do everything possible (all the secondary mission objectives) it should be well over 25 hours, we had a reviewer in here this week and it took him well over 8 hours to play the first 4 levels and they are the easy ones…..
Be back in a while,
more answers: 1. About getting into the business. I have a College degree but I have it in the medical field. I got into the industry over 16 years ago, taught myself assembly language on the old Atari/C64 and wrote two games that were published by SSI. Because of my management experience I was hired by SSI as manager of test and external development. Did everything from Producer to VP of Development (I produced Dragonstrike and Eye of the Beholder for Westwood). My recommendation is to get into computer science if you want to program, also do some engineering (very useful now). If you want to produce, you need management classes, some computer science, writing and business. If you want to design you need computer science, writing and an understanding of art. It is a bit of a daunting task to get in the buisness right now. I have one guy who has a Masters that worked in test before getting a design job.
2. The next beta will be in late November/early December (not firm yet) and will be must larger, 100s of people will be playing. We haven’t decided on specifics of how it will be set up and made available, we will let everyone know as soon as we do.
3. In both Single and Multi-play every character has a pistol with unlimited ammo.
4. The portable Ion Cannon can take out small vehicles (Nod Buggy) with one shot and does a good amount of damage to all other vehicles, also is very effective against buildings. Problem is requires you to hold down the fire button for a long time. If someone charges you with a pistol or rifle it can be difficult to escape.
5. Each side in C&C mode has exclusive weapons. The Flamethrower, Chemsprayer and the obelisk modules (standard and chain) are Nod weapons and the Tiberium Autorifle, Personal Ion Cannon, grenade launcher and Mass driver (currently a rail gun but undergoing a change) are all GDI exclusive.
6. There are no air units in C&C mode. We found that the current system and balance is optimal (we looked at the ideas you mentioned).
clarifying the contents of one rendered image: Actually they are portable obelisk modules :D, the lastest version sports a red tint (it is Nod specific) and has a large red crystal that focuses the beam. There is also a chain driven version.
taking out buildings in both single and multiplayer: In single player we are creating a sitution similar to the original C&C, the commando can go inside a building and blow it up, very easy. So in order to do this we created the building nerve center, the MCT, placing a single C4 will blow it up in single player. In multiplayer (C&C mode) we make it a little tougher, it takes 3 C4 to take out an MCT and all characters other than the engineer carry only 1 C4. The engineer can also disarm the C4 by blasting the C4 with his repair module. It takes a few seconds to disarm so it is a very dangerous game for the engineer. There are two levels of engineer, the grunt and the Special Forces, the difference is the number and type of C4 carried and the range and strength of the repair module. The engineer can also repair damage to the building.
Closer on shooting the lense in the Obelisk of Light: Sorry. It’s a bullet proof lense.
comprehensive testing: Relax all. We have several testers from Canada, the UK and other parts of Europe. Renegade is a global game and we will test it accordingly.
Devinoch with a correction: Actually, Sean, they’re referring to the fansite contest, which is unfortunately limited to people from the USA, for legal reasons. I’m not privy as to why the legal department decides such things — I just have to follow what they tell me. Sorry guys.
responding to negative comments related to yesterday’s released movie: Uh, Stealth Tanks phase in and out when you get too close to them, just like they did in C&C. And they also uncloak when attacking.
And are you really going to worry about a small thing like dust when the gameplay is utterly fantastic?
number of beta testers: There are 18 testers in this beta test. The number of people who will be admitted into the next test has yet to be determined.
